LONDON, England and HELSINKI, Finland, July 9th, 1999 — NOKIA CORPORATION and London-based PC manufacturer ELONEX PLC announced today that they have reached agreement concerning the licensing of Elonex’s display power management technology. Power-management systems allow personal computer display monitors to consume less power after user-defined or default idle periods.
Nokia is the first major monitor maker in Europe to license Elonex’s patents. Elonex has previously licensed Hewlett-Packard Company of Palo Alto, California and Hitachi of Tokyo. Elonex expects that other European companies will follow Nokia’s lead as they seek to comply with increasingly important energy conservation standards. Government agencies and independent organizations worldwide are involved in reducing power consumption in office equipment.
The scope and terms of the agreement are confidential, but Nokia obtains a license under all of Elonex’s display power management patents worldwide. These patents comprise more than twenty independent claims directed to the power management of peripheral devices including display monitors; and enable PC systems to be energy efficient.
Reijo Lantto, President of Nokia Display Products, and Elonex’s Commercial Director Michael Spiro, joined in saying that they view the agreement as a positive outcome for both businesses.
